September 12-13, 2010

Did you know that Federal law requires that railroad employees involved in the transport of hazardous materials be trained in its safe handling every three years?  This seminar has been designed to increase your knowledge on the special requirements of handling Hazardous materials in Transportation. Conducted by FRA HazMat Staff Director William Schoonover and Program Manager Ray Kasey, this course will consist of awareness and general safety, tank car 101, hazard communications, markings, labeling and other function specific points of this discipline.  There will also be a presentation on storage in transit, or storage of hazardous material on leased tracks. The session will review areas such as HazMat incident statistics, incident reporting requirements, DOT special permits and FRA movement approvals, and shipper responsibilities.  You'll learn the fundamental HazMat requirements including DOT registration, training, and recordkeeping requirements.  Messrs. Schoonover and Kasey will review and then quiz the group on HazMat communications during transportation, including shipping papers and emergency response, EDI, placarding, labels, and markings.  The final module will cover carriage by rail (Part 174), outlining the carrier responsibilities and the handling of HazMat packaging.  Additionally, the group will review the various Tank Car types and non-accident releases (NARs) and their causes.

As this seminar will count as the triennial training requirement, there will be a test administered at the end and a certificate will be given to those who successfully pass this course.  The class will start Monday morning at 8:00am and will conclude at noon on Tuesday.  Seminar attendees will have access to all of our social events such as the receptions, breakfasts, breaks, and lunches.  They'll also be eligible for the door prize drawings in the exhibit hall.  See page 6 for registration fees.
