Wind energy, a converted form of solar energy, is one of the rising stars among emerging markets. The desire to find cheap, easily-harnessed energy that reduces dependence on oil is one of the priorities of federal government agencies and advocacy groups alike. Like other markets, there are ways that short line and regional railroads can make wind energy a source of constant revenue.

Wind Energy as a Marketable Resource

Wind, due to its universal presence throughout the world, is a unique energy source, in that its use is not restricted by finite deposits located in exclusive areas. Wind Energy - Getting Started

To operate a wind farm, you need one primary feature - wind. While this might seem an elementary step, it is important to understand your wind. For a wind farm to be considered, it must have a minimum average wind-speed of 11 to 13 miles per hour. In addition, it is important to take other factors into account, such as access to land, capital and a market. AWEA has produced a useful document titled "10 Steps to Developing a Wind Farm."
