Corn Production Poised to Set Record in 2010

Progressive Railroading recently published an article that bears good news for railroads’ grain traffic in 2010. The article highlights a report issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that projects an increase in corn production in 2010. A 1% increase is anticipated, which would bring corn production to a record 13.2 billion bushels in the coming year. The previous record for corn production came in 2007, with 13 billion bushels.

The increase in corn production is attributed to the use of "scientifically proven" biotechnology applications. U.S. Grain Council’s Director of Biotechnology Programs Rebecca Fecitt said that, "We hope to see this upward trend in yields for U.S. corn continue."

In addition, the USDA projects sorghum production to increase to 383 million bushels, which is 19 million bushels higher than the previously projected amount in December 2009.
