For the week ending January 23, 2010, U.S. rail volume grand totaled 30.2 billion ton-miles, up 4.9 percent from the comparable period last year. U.S. carload rail traffic was up 2.9 percent, up 10.7 percent in the East, but down 0.2 percent in the West. Also for the week, U.S. intermodal rail traffic was up 2.9 percent, Canadian carload rail traffic was up 13.5 percent, Canadian intermodal rail traffic was up 7.4 percent, Mexican carload rail traffic was up 29.8 percent, and Mexican intermodal rail traffic was up 41.6 percent.
For the period January 1 through January 23, 2010, U.S. rail volume grand totaled 84.4 billion ton-miles, down 2.5 percent from the comparable period last year. Also for this period, U.S. carload rail traffic was down 3.2 percent, U.S. intermodal rail traffic was up 0.9 percent, Canadian carload rail traffic was up 19.1 percent, Canadian intermodal rail traffic was up 4.4 percent, Mexican carload rail traffic was up 27.4 percent, and Mexican intermodal rail traffic was up 42.5 percent.
