A notable rail relocation project at the former Bethlehem Steel site in Lackawanna, NY was recently completed. The new line replaces a “single serve” line with a “spine” line that maximizes access to other industrial locations on the site. The complex is served by G&W’s Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad......Caney Fork & Western Railroad, in association with Middle Tennessee Limestone, is nearly completion of a multi-use rail facility in Tullahoma,, TN. The new facility includes a below-grade discharge bunker that will allow rail cars loaded with bulk commodities to unload their contents from below. A conveyor system will then move the commodities to ground level for loading onto trucks......Capehart Scatchard recently announced that one of its principals, John Fiorilla Esq., has been appointed receiver of historic rail equipment owned by the Pemberton Township (NJ) Historic Trust. Mr. Fiorilla will be charged with auctioning off and finding new locations for rail equipment currently stored on Pemberton Township property. Mr. Fiorilla is a 39-year specialist in the practice of railroad law......Central California Traction was profiled in a recent edition of the Stockton Record newspaper. The article noted CCT’s operating 120 miles of track, 76 of which are at the Port of Stockton, CA. CCT, which was founded in 1905, is two-thirds owned by Union Pacific and one-third owned by BNSF......Florida East Coast Railway recently named William Costantini its Vice President and Chief Transportation Officer. Mr. Costantini is a 28 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, the last three of which were spent as the military assistant to the assistant commandant of the Corps in Washington, DC......Indiana Rail Road recently officially opened its new $7.6 million Locomotive Maintenance Facility near Jasonville, IN on September 13. The new facility, which locates in INRD’s Hiawatha Yard, is equipped with state-of-the-art environmental controls, ergonomically-friendly and climate-controlled work areas and an on-site parts warehouse......Also from the Indiana Rail Road, its president, Tom Hoback, was profiled in a recent edition of the Greencastle Banner-Graphic newspaper. The newspaper noted Mr. Hoback’s response to those who pine wistfully for “the good old days of the railroad.” Said Mr. Hoback, “These are the good, old days…Railroads have never moved more freight and are more reliable than they have ever been"......Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad hosted its annual “Civil War Remembered” reenactment the weekend of September 21-22. Civil War reenactors performed outside the train as it passed through the Pennsylvania countryside......Nashville & Eastern Railroad recently held a mock train disaster training exercise. The railroad’s “Music City Star” commuter train that operates between Nashville and Lebanon, TN served as the focus for the exercise. The exercise was designed to test the participants’ response to a mass casualty incident occurring on a remote stretch of track not easily accessed by road......Nebraska Central Railroad recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Starting in 1993 with about 20 employees, the railroad now employees more than 100 and average more than 130,000 carloads annually. The NCRC is part of the Rio Grande Pacific family of railroads......North Shore Railroads has begun a program to send its key management personnel to a local leadership program near its Northumberland, PA headquarters. First to graduate from the Leadership Susquehanna Valley Program in 2012 was NSHR’s Brigid Rich; next to graduate will be NSHR’s Jeb Stotter in 2013 and NSHR’s Diana Williams in 2014. NSHR’s Todd Hunter, who will graduate from a like class run by the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce in 2015, notes that these programs “…further personal and professional development…[and] build upon our connections to the local communities we serve"......PowerRail Distribution recently held a special barbecue near its Duryea, PA headquarters to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary. PowerRail is a provider of locomotive parts and components......St. Marys Railroad will operate special excursion trains on October 5 and 12. The trips will originate in St. Marys, GA and run over a north a few miles out of town before returning, about a 90 minute trip altogether. Since 2007, the St. Marys has been a part of Boatright Companies......The Andersons recently completed its purchase of Mile Rail LLC, a rail car repair and cleaning provider. The purchase includes a primary location in Kansas City, MO and two satellite locations in Hastings, NE and Jeffersonville, IN, as well as mobile units in the Central Midwest......Timken Company recent approved a plan to separate the company’s steel business from its bearing and power transmission division through a spinoff, creating two publicly held companies. The transaction, valued at approximately $15 million, is expected to be complete within 12 months, subject to customary regulatory approvals......The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority recently continued the contract of Veolia Transportation to operate its Tri-Rail commuter rail service through June, 2017. Veolia has operated the service since 2007. Tri-Rail operates over 72 miles of line running parallel to Interstate 95 between West Palm Beach and Miami, FL. Service operates to 18 stations, including three major airports......Wisconsin & Southern Railroad will use a $2.3 million grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to restore service to about 10 miles of line between Madison and Oregon, WI.  The line has been out of service since 1997. When operational, it will transport carloads of sand and gravel to a concrete production facility on the line.
