One of the key aspects of the passage of the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (RSIA) was the creation of a timeline that outlines the key dates by which standards referred to must be met. To view the list of known dates pertaining to the entire RSIA, click here.

RSIA Dates

October 16, 2009 - DOT or RSAC will complete a study on the safety impact of use of personal electronic devices by on-duty rail employees.

January 12, 2010 - Final PTC Rule issued.

March 12, 2010 - Final PTC Rule Goes into effect.

April 16, 2010 - Railroads must submit Positive Train Control (PTC) plans to DOT.

December 31, 2012 - DOT will report to Congress on progress in implementation of PTC.

December 31, 2015 - Railroads must implement PTC on certain trains pursuant to their safety plans.
