Experiences/lessons learned from operating during COVID-19?
OmniTRAX’s focus during this period continues to be on our people and their safety. We are also taking efforts to ensure that people remain away from the workplace until they are symptom free as indicated by the CDC. For those in the field, we are supporting individuals who need to take time off to care for others or are themselves symptomatic. For those in our corporate offices, we are making arrangements to limit people in former gathering spots like conference rooms and even elevators. Our field people are also practicing social distancing while working and routinely sanitizing all equipment. Many of these practices will go on well past the introduction of an effective therapy or vaccine.

We are always in frequent communication with our Class 1 partners as well as our customers to ensure as smooth a flow of goods from point of production to point of consumption as possible. To improve our performance, we were working on a PSR-like model for all of our railroads prior to the pandemic. The changing requirements from both customers and partners has hastened the process to make sure essential items like toilet paper get to where they’re needed when they’re needed.

What do you value most about membership in ASLRRA?
ASLRRA provides OmniTRAX with a wide variety of services, from lobbying for grants and other resources to giving guidance on the latest safety protocols. The educational and training programs, both at the conferences and through webinars, help our team add to their skill sets making the company a more knowledgeable and better-run organization.

During the pandemic, we’ve drawn on the expertise of ASLRRA and its partners to help formulate parts of our response and to give a “gut-check” for other elements. The website is chock full of COVID-related resources that we are using almost daily to adjust our processes to reflect the very latest information from the government and the private sector.

We also value having the ability to connect with other short line members and being able to compare notes on everything from operations to marketing strategy. It is also helpful that the association facilitates recognition of our role in the supply chain, so that customers can better understand our unique capabilities.
