Our government affairs team for the short line industry includes a mix of in-house ASLRRA staff and outside consults. In-house, for legislative issues your lead contact is Mara Stark-Alcalá, for USDOT/FRA regulatory and safety matters it is Jo Strang, and for STB economic regulatory issues it is Sarah Yurasko.
On legislative issues, our outside consultants include the team at Chambers, Conlon & Hartwell (CC&H), Ed McKechnie at McKechnie Co, Randy Delay at Public/Private Strategies, and Cynthia Guerrero at California Strategies. Our team is focused on issues that directly impact short line railroads, including the Short Line Railroad Rehabilitation Tax Credit (45G), grant programs such as CRISI, BUILD, INFRA, and the National Highway Freight Program, opposing increases in truck size and weight on our nation’s roads, and guarding against unnecessary crew size mandates. Educating our elected officials at the national level is critical to our success. We are also eager and willing to help member railroads and supplier firms host grassroots political events around the country to be able to show elected officials first-hand what railroads are doing every day to keep the country moving and how federal policies affect our opportunities.
