Heritage, excursion and tourist railroads typically have positions similar to those at freight railroads, including railcar mechanics and locomotive engineers. Because these railroads provide passenger excursions, many also have customer service, sales and marketing roles.
Industry suppliers provide a variety of goods and services to short line and regional railroads. The types of businesses and range of career opportunities in this segment are vast, and may include engineering and law firms, equipment manufacturers and leasing companies, financial advisors and recruiting agencies, railroad material and technology producers, compliance and training organizations and much more.
